Prof David  Marshall: The Holy Grail of Oceanography

Oxford University

Professor David Marshall narrates his journey through his wealth of experiences and how they've shaped his research in physical oceanography. Starting from his favorite pastime of practicing the scales, chords and cadences, he transitions into his thoughts about the current state of oceanography and his hopes about the Theory of Everything.

It's really interesting to think about the idea of approximations. What sorts of models can we develop by choosing parameters to "idealize"Will these models still be accurate approximations given our changing climate? If not, how will we change the way we "idealize" the parameters to cope with the evolution of the geophysical system?

Even developing the optical and signal processing technologies to make better sea probes is an entire field of study itself. There's really a lot out there to fantasize about!
